About Gary Pritts

Gary Pritts Combining a love of nature and the precision of a scientist with his artistic talents, Gary Pritts captures wildlife in a realist style and in natural settings. While his preferred medium is graphite, he is accomplished in multiple media.

The native Tennessean began formal training in art beginning in sixth grade and later enrolled in the Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida, from which he earned an associates and bachelor of fine arts degrees in Graphic Design and Illustration.
In 1982 he began applying his talents and technical knowledge to the production of illustrations, artist concept and visual aids, both general and technical, in subjects relating to space technology, missile systems, aircraft, ground transports and associated equipment. He then worked as a technical illustrator producing technical and general illustrations on various paper-and-pulp manufacturing systems and later as a mechanical designer producing technical drawings on heating and ventilation systems for hospitals, office buildings and industrial facilities. In these positions he typically worked in pen and ink while occasionally doing mixed media (pen/ink/watercolor).

Prompted by his interest in nature, Mr. Pritts changed his career path in the 1990s, enrolling in Middle Tennessee State University to study herpetology in the biology program where he earned a bachelor and a master degree. Mr. Pritts then worked in environmental consulting from 1995 to 2014.

While working as a wetland/natural resource specialist, he was able to make observations that he then translated to art, producing wildlife drawings. He refined his realist style, presenting his subjects in their true-to-life environments. Although he studied amphibians and reptiles in his biology pursuits, he focuses on mammalian and avian wildlife in his art. Mr. Pritts is skilled in ink/water color, color pencil, acrylic and oil paints, but prefers working in graphite.

Mr. Pritts retired from environmental consulting in 2014 to devote his artistic skills and technical knowledge to illustrating. Currently residing in Huntsville, Alabama, his artwork is held in several private collections in Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Pennsylvania and Tennessee.
